GRID STEP. You can print out the base construction lines and start drawing on tracing paper or you can draw the grid layout yourself using the following steps. 1) Draw a rectangle that will define the conditional proportions and boundaries of the chosen drawing.
2) From the middle of the rectangle, draw one vertical and one horizontal line equally dividing the shape.
3) Draw another horizontal line equally dividing the upper half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a horizontal line equally dividing the bottom half of the rectangle.
4) Draw a vertical line equally dividing the left half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a vertical line equally dividing the right half of the rectangle.
GRID STEP. Mark off the width and height of the picture, and the main proportions of the clown’s figure. Draw the shape of his head and a centre line through it.
GRID STEP. Outline the body and hat.
GRID STEP. Add guidelines for the pant legs, nose, top of the hat, and frock coat.
GRID STEP. Sketch the clown’s boots, hands, and facial features.
GRID STEP. Draw the shapes of the boots, mouth, eyes, and ears. Add the bow, the pants’ waist, button, and lapels of the frock coat.
GRID STEP. Draw the fingers. Draw in detail the clown’s clothes and facial features. Outline his hair.
GRID STEP. Work on the whole figure, adding more details.
GRID STEP. Contour the clown, trying to vary the thickness and darkness of the line. Draw the details more carefully, and add the floor. Erase all the guidelines.
